Meet the Team

Valerie Carrillo, MS, LPC

Valerie Carrillo identifies as queer and uses she/her pronouns. She holds a Master of Science in Education in Professional Counseling with an Emphasis in Clinical Mental Health from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and interned at Lawrence University. She loves growing and learning as a therapist and appreciates the endless self-growth that the career has to offer.

Valerie joined the field after seeing how the invisible wounds of neglecting mental health impacted people in her life and others on a larger scale. Working as a mental health technician a few years ago, she realized that becoming a therapist was something that had always called to her, and she has found great meaning in the career.

Valerie believes that while every human’s story is unique, we all share the desire to grow into the most authentic versions of ourselves. In her work, she strive to create a supportive and nonjudgmental space where clients feel empowered, understood, and safe to explore their emotions. She primarily use a person-centered approach, while integrating evidence-based practices such as mindfulness and breath work to best meet each client’s needs.

Valerie is passionate about helping clients heal from within, build self-trust, and cultivate confidence in who they are. Above all, she values vulnerability, empathy, and acceptance, and she is committed to walking alongside her clients as they navigate challenges such as depression, anxiety, grief, and life transitions. She is very excited to work at Canopy because of the values and morals that are integrated within the work culture. She looks forward to working with clients who have been historically marginalized and strives to make a valuable impact where it is needed.

Valerie’s family is from Mexico and she grew up as an only child. When not working, she loves to spend time with friends and loved ones. She really loves to start her days with music playing on the TV and relaxing or dancing. She also enjoys photography, spending time out in nature, and being around animals. As a huge cat lover, she is planning on adopting two kittens in the near future and also wants to get more tattoos! She is a Scorpio, for those who believe in the alignment of the stars and universe.
